Opportunity

Some of the most revered civic structures in Texas are the county court houses that are usually arrange as freestanding structures in a civic square with commercial development surroundings. So, when the city of Frisco decided to construct a new civic center, they located their city hall at the heart of a 147-acre development. During the planning process the library was added to the mix to make for a more lively community structure. The design envisioned a central tower and adjacent colonnade.

Details

  • The tower is constructed of 8-inch-high, split-face, Sunset Red granite blocks


  • During a visit to Marble Falls, Texas, to view the Cold Spring Granite operations, the design team noticed there was a lot of thin-cut material being fabricated into slabs. The fabrication process ended with the edges of the slabs being sent to a remnant pile and realized that these residual pieces presented a cost effective solution to constructing granite columns


  • The colonnade is composed of twelve, five-foot diameter columns, 32-feet tall. The resulting column is unique but appears from a distance to have flutes similar to traditional columns


  • The use of regional remnant materials contributes to the Silver LEED certification
